The Cocoa Box: Sheabutter Cottage X Natural Belle Beauty Box Reveal

Due to the success of my first beauty box launched over the summer [that sold out in less than a week] I've team up with The Sheabutter Cottage and curated a second box in time for Christmas.
The second box is Cocoa Butter themed, using the best Ghanaian Cocoa Butter

" Cocoa butter is one of the most stable fats known, a quality that coupled with natural antioxidants that prevent rancidity, grants it a storage life of two to five years. The velvety texture, pleasant fragrance and emollient properties of cocoa butter have made it a popular ingredient in products for the skin, such as cosmetics, soaps and lotions.
Please note that cocoa butter is hard and brittle at room temperature due to the presence of natural stearic/palmitic acid and needs to be warmed up before use. Unlike shea which grows wild, cocoa is planted during the raining season in Ghana. Provision of shade is very important for this to growth. The farmers work very hard in weeding the cocoa farm - this helps the cocoa to grow"
This box is a discovery of some of my favourite cocoa inspired products along with some limited edition items that will only be available in this box. [this box will not be repeated once it's gone it's GONE!]

The Stain: Lip & Cheek Stain By Lavera from EcoVerde

Affordable and Natural/Organic/Eco don't necessarily go hand in hand, along with being able to find products easily [anyone else tired of shipping from US and AUS?] so I'm taking some time to review some affordable and reasonably accessible natural make up lines. I've been a fan of Lavera for a while since trying out their lip glosses, they are available on the high street and also online. I got mine from Ecco Verde which has a lot of affordable brands. Lavera make up products start at just £3.69 and they have a wide range of non toxic  products [their products have been certified organic by NaTrue]

The Wildchild: Jace Beauty Wefts + Closure DIY Full Wig

Another day another wig, this time using hair from Jace Beauty they have a huge selection of hair textures and pride themselves on providing 100% raw virgin hair that lasts. I was contacted by Jace Beauty to try out their textured range of wefted hair. Jace hold a variety of of textures from a soft wave to a kinky curl. I pride myself on always bringing you all something different so I opted for Jace's Wildchild [mild] which is a lightly textured [think kinky straight but without the coarseness] this is a lot straighter than anything I have tried previously, I'm not usually a smooth kind of girl however I wanted to try something new.

The Lip Gel: BEBA Skin Energy Skin Lab Lip Gel

I've found a new product must have, this time for my lips, if like me you are prone to dry, chapped lips and dreaded cold sores then you need to get your hands on BEBA Skin Energy Skin Lab Lip Gel. It's basically a one stop shop for lip protection without harsh chemicals. The BEBA lip gel has a normalizing, cleansing and repairing effect. The gel also offers optimal support for cold sores, inflammation, irritation and cracking of the lips.

The Costume: Black Wednesday Addams Makeup

I find it hard to come up with Halloween costumes ideas, no one ever gets who I'm suppose to be and always end up being a sexy black cat, this year I decided to be my spirit animal Wednesday Addams.
This Halloween look took embarrassingly little makeup to achieve, the look was created by using only;

The New Hero Products: The Curl Care Project

Hey Loves, it's been a busy couple of weeks but I haven't been sitting on my hands, Freya had her 3rd birthday and we have been trying out new products from Antidote Street. The Curl Care Project is a unique brand created to address the needs of children with textured hair in the care system. This a project close to my heart as I was in foster care from 11 months old. The Curl Care Project not only has a line of products but also workshops to help carers and parents care for coils, curls and kinks.

I'm pretty hands off when it come to styling Freya's hair, I don't think we really need to spend too much time primping and coiffing toddlers, we usually wash her hair once a week, and moisturise daily, however with the activities of a 3 year old Freya's hair often looks like the above! I was sent the TCCP Moisturising Shampoo and the Coil Cleanser to try out.

The Interview: The Curl Care Projects Shelly Line Tells All

I've been blogging for quite some time, and I've reviewed and highlighted many wonderful UK brands, and sometimes I come across something that strikes a cord with me. You may have seen my mentions on Instagram of a great new product line from The Curl Care Project, not only are they wonderful products [stay tuned for my product review] but they also work in tandem with workshops devoted to educating carers of children of colour in the foster care system. This is definitely a project close to my heart, as I was in foster care from the age of 11 months old until I was 16 years old. Growing up in foster care has many ups and downs for carers and children, as a child who was placed with carers from a different cultural background to myself [my foster parents are white] I fully understand the need for projects like The Curl Care Project. I grew up in the 80's before YouTube and the internet, and before the natural hair movement, I was subjected to doo doo plaits, brylcreem and tears [so many tears from myself and my foster mum] which definitely resulted in a tempestuous relationship with my kinks. Things have definitely come a long way since then. Not only do I have a new found love for my hair but brands like The Curl Care Project are here to advise carers to add to the amazing job they already do caring for foster children.

I caught up with Shelly Line one of the founders of The Curl Care Project.....

The Wraps: ChilliPeppa On Etsy

Another day another mumtrepreneur kicking ass, Chillipeppa is an amazing Etsy store serving up beautiful African print handmade items, from wedding invites to the amazing African print head wraps that I'm modelling.

The Vegan Bags: Sustainable Fashion + Love Beatrice Review

I'm currently looking at cleaning up my closet, it's a slow process, that is hard for a certified shopaholic like me! As I've gotten older I'm becoming more and more focused on investing in quality fashion items as opposed to fast fashion that falls apart even faster. This has lead me to think more consciously about who I am buying from and adjusting my buying habits, such as...

The Quickie How To: Easy Sleek Low Puff/Bun On Short Hair

How do I get my short 4C hair into a sleek bun/low puff? this is one of the most frequently asked questions, it's pretty simple really Eco Styler Gel, a Soft/waves brush and a head wrap.

The Pre Poo: Importance of Pre Shampoo Oil Treatments

Pre Poo [pre shampoo/pre cleanse] is one of those natural hair girl things we all do and probably don't really understand why we are doing it [definitely the case for me for quite some time]. I've started to pre poo my hair religiously before every wash and I'm seeing the benefits of the very useful step in my regimen.

Pre pooing is an important step in your hair care, and could be the key to beating dry hair and retaining moisture and it's something you shouldn't skip if you like myself have highly porous hair.

So what is pre pooing?

The Co-Wash: Aveda Be Curly Co Wash

I have Aveda to thank for my love of holistic products, many years ago I started my career in the salon industry with Aveda. And as a brand they definitely got me me thinking about the products I use and there sourcing stories. as the years have passed I have discovered many brands that use organic or natural ingredients so I was delighted when Aveda contacted me to try some products geared towards textured hair. Aveda has always catered to all hair types and I've used ranges such as Dry Remedy and Brilliant. It's been sometime since using Aveda products and some new products have been launched in my absence.

The Oil: Loofah Oil

I'm currently obsessed with Loofah Oil, a cold pressed oil from the loofah plant that grows wild in parts of West Africa. Cucumber like plant is also used as a loofah sponge when dried out [hence the name] the oil comes from the seeds of the plants.

The Tassels: DIY Tassel Sandals

I'm on a roll with my DIYs at the moment, if you follow me on Instagram you'll know I've been quite busy up-cycling T-shirts, Bras, Skirts and much more. Some of the items are just for fun and some are available to purchase on my Etsy Shop Label Neutral

"Label Neutral is a concept that has evolved over the years, I've always loved fashion and crafting and Label Neutral is a combination of the two. Label Neutral takes the unwanted and reworks it into something stylish and new from old tees to old bras anything can have new life breathed into it."

Along with my Beauty Blogging and Mama stuff I'll be posting mini DIY projects that anyone can do like the following Tassal Sandals......

The Twist Out: I love Afro Hydrate & Hold Crème Review

I've officially lifted the seal on my product ban, I've only been using  castor oil, water and shea, which has been working pretty well for me as I have been protective styling for over 6 months now. However summer is coming and wigs are far to hot to wear on a daily basis so I'll be rocking my fro a couple of times a week. the first product I gave a test run is I Love Afro Hydrate and Hold Crème. This a styling creme that leaves hair soft and shiny with a light hold which is great for maintaining Twist and Braid Outs.

The Collective: United Kurls

The highlight of Curlvolution for me was seeing members of the United Kurls Collective on stage. United Kurls are a collective of female UK natural hair brand owners who have come together to support one another.

"We bring together the finest UK home grown natural haircare brands to create a platform and spread awareness about truly trusted UK haircare brands.

United Kurls was formed so that members of the collective may better serve the UK and Global consumers with useful information, quality products and services that would truly benefit them."

United Kurls includes Shea Butter Cottage, I Love Afro, Mane Divas, Shea Decadence, Almocado, Naturally Simple Haircare, Afrodeity, Curly by Nature and BeUnique Haircare. I'm so proud to know some of these women personally though blogging and the natural hair community. Their energy individually is so positive combined they are off the chart.

I can not stress enough how important it is that we support UK natural hair brands especially those run by female entrepreneurs. Not only is this helping to boost the UK economy but it is helping to lift up women in a positive way. The collective is proof that working together is possible, proof that black women support each other.

The Event: Curlvolution 2015

Another year another Curlvolution, I spent Saturday at the 4th Annual natural hair show Curlvolution. This year I hung out with my favourite brand Shea Butter Cottage and meeting some wonderful women! as usual the event was a huge success with a bigger better line up of events and the inclusion of seminars, from a mix of UK and US talents. The vendors where awesome with some of my favs in attendance like Big Hair, Mane Divas, I love Afro to name a few. and of cause the eagerly anticipated Panel discussion, that this year was focused on 50 shades of brown [the inclusion of brown beauty in mainstream beauty]

It's a well known fact that I don't do many events, due to my hectic schedule working in salon, blogging, various side projects and being a full time mama but I have so much time for the organisers of Curlvolution, it's always a chilled vibe, it;s always fun, and they take on a lot of our feedback making the show bigger and better every year. and also it's just an amazing opportunity to connect with so many wonderful women with amazing natural hair [duh!] check out just a few of the beauties I snapped.....

The Map: Face Mapping & Your Skin

Face Mapping is not a new craze, like many beauty 'trends' it's actually quite an old idea that has been re imagined by some in the beauty industry. Face Mapping has been used for hundreds of years to determine what our skin issues are really trying to tell us about our bodies. Where as today we can use scans and blood tests to determine what our health issues are in the past reading the body was the only way to figure out many of illnesses that occurred.

The Purse Friendly Natural Moisturisers: Yes To & Bee Good

My love of skincare is well documented, I'd rather spend a bucket load of a moisturiser than a foundation or lipstick any day of the week. I'm a huge fan of Anotnia Burrell Skincare, it costs a packet but I personally think the results are well worth the cost, however I'm aware that not everyone wants to spend £40+ on a serum and I get a lot of requests for my thoughts on more affordable options that can be purchased from the high street.
Slowly but surely the British high street is tapping into the natural and organic market with more and more stores holding lines that use non toxic ingredients. Two of the brands that are on my radar are Bee Good and Yes To Carrots.

The Meditation: Meditation for Hair Loss

If you follow me on Instagram or read my blog regularly you will know that I've been struggling with hair loss for quite some time. I've been having unexplained hair fall in several spots the hair eventually grows back only to fall again. I've been to trichologists and doctors and though helpful to a point nothing topical or medical seems to be combating the loss of hair and I had been told it could be stress related. This has led me to look for alternative therapies in order to combat stress and heal from the inside out.
Stress is a constant part of our daily lives and can make an impact on our beauty. Stress can cause you to be more prone acne, early onset of wrinkles, dry skin and hair loss.

Look Who's Misrepresenting You: The Beauty Industry & WOC

Twitter is usually the place where I talk about reality tv (my guilty pleasure), repost interesting articles and check my notification, yesterday I was was @ mentioned in a petition  by @weareworthit2 that prompts companies such as coty & loreal to 'Sell cosmetic facial products on the high street for ethnic minorities in the UK'. @weareworthit2 or Miriam as I later found out is truly passionate about this issue (learn more here) and I've long since been bashing away at this topic. Some time ago I wrote an open letter to brands '50 shades of beige' where I vented my frustrations at the cosmetics on offer on the great British high street. This article led to my participating in the early days of Brown Beauty Talk a successful beauty chat and website for women of colour. So such a petition should be right up my street?

The Guest Post: Supporting UK Brands

There seems to be a tendency in the UK for British naturalistas to be drawn to US hair care products, why is this the case? Some just follow the crowd, led by high subscribing YouTube vloggers whose income is now supplemented through the free products sent their way, and paid for reviews. Although I would like to add, there are a minority of YouTube vloggers who still remain scrupulous and real to the cause, supporting naturals on their journey through unbiased reviews, real advice and heartfelt support for UK brands. Some say price is a big issue, and so therefore choose to remain ‘in the pocket’ of big conglomerate hair care companies failing to understand the economics of the business; ‘big fish’ vs. ‘little fish’, and why price structures are set as they are.

The Protective Style: Wig FAQ

This is my third month wearing wigs and can I say that I'm a little bit addicted! I have been switching it up between my Nazuri Curls Wigs and my Kurly Klips full lace wig.

Why Wigs?

I've been asked frequently why I'm now wearing wigs and there are many reasons, firstly I've lost a lot of hair due to what we first thought was a scalp infection but I'm now convinced it's due to a low immune system. My scalp has been reacting completely differently to products so much so that I have had to cut them ALL out, I'm currently only using water, shea butter and almond oil for my scalp as everything else causes scalp flair ups. this no regimen regimen has stopped the hair shedding along with long term protective styling seems to be working for me.

The Trend: Kinky Curly Extensions

The trend for kinky curly extensions is really heating up and I believe that 2015 is the year that the industry makes a huge impact.

There is a lot of talk about the kinky curly weaves and wigs mostly good but some negative or perhaps wary of the impact this will have on the natural hair community. one that prides itself on educating women on growing healthy beautiful hair. The weave v natural debates runs on (and on and on) and I really have no time for it to be honest.
