The Kurly Klips: Clip In Review

I've just got my hand on Kurly Klips, Naturally kinky curly clip in hair extensions. Over the last few years weave technology has been getting better and better, with the popularity of  of naturally kinky coily hair you can now get your hands on 'natural' textured weaves made from 100% human hair. This great but personally I'm not a huge fan of sew in weaves, I like to get to my scalp easily so it can breath, it's also a style that I feel is dependent on seeing a stylist. So new line Kurly Klips seemed like a great concept as they have the effect of a sew in weave but you can apply them in less the 10 minutes at home!

Kurly Klips are made from 100% Remi Human hair, they come in two different textures, 'My Spirals' and 'My Fro' and come in 3 different lengths 'Black Mermaid' 'Bobcat' and 'Shoulder Chic'

I was sent 'My Fro' in 'Shoulder Chic' in colour natural black, they come in packs of 7, which include: 1 X 10 inch weft
1 X 6 inch weft
5 X 3 inch weft
I got two packs and used 10 of the wefts, due to my side being cut low, most people will need to packs for a full head.

The Kurly Klips are simple to use, I parted the section of hair that I want to use to cover the wefts (I left the front of my hair) and flat twisted the rest of my hair vertically and applied Kurly Klips diagonally starting from my nape using the 3 inch wefts and working my way up. (see video below via Kurly Klips YouTube Channel)

'My Fro' texture is tightly coiled but defined, over time I think the hair will appear more textured but it arrived looking natural and feels really soft. the roots are silkier than the ends but I think it blends well. The hair can be washed and and coloured. I love how versatile the Kurly Clips are, you can go big and bold or just add a little length and body to your hair. for a pack of 7 wefts it's $179.99 (which is around £118.00) which works out quite well seen as you are cutting out the cost of installation and you can put them in and take them out when you want to. Kurly Klips also offer free WORLDWIDE shipping.

I'll definitely be rocking these while I grow out my current hair cut, the clips are stress free for my hair and also for my lifestyle and I can't wait to experiment with Kurly Klips!

The Summer Break

This is one of the longest breaks I've had between blog posts in 5 years, forgive me but my last post was 10 days ago. I've been busy enjoying the sun with this munckin so (who could resist?) and having a much needed social media detox.

How are you spending your summer?

The Face: Vapour Organic Beauty

Vapour Organic Beauty is continuing to impress me, not only has is given me my first perfect natural lipstick that is truly pigmented but it all has a range of skin products for all skin types and thankfully shades! Vapour Atmosphere Soft Focus and Luminous foundations comes in 12 shades 3 of which are suitable for olive to dark skin. Ok, so you all may not find your exact match but I have to give props to Vapour for even including darker shades in a relatively small range. I can name countless lines that do not even bother to include one shade for women of colour.

I've been using Vapour Organic Beauty Stratus Soft Focus Skin Perfecter, Atmosphere Luminous Foundation and Illusionist Concealer. all from Being Content The combination has been working great in the current heat wave we are having in the UK.

The Stratus Soft Focus Instant Skin Perfector in s902 (£47) is light weight and gives a velvety base for applying foundation.

"The Skin Perfector is made with 70% Certified Organic ingredients and 30% natural mineral pigments and vitamins, with Organic Pumpkin and Papaya complex, essential fatty acid-rich Organic Evening Primrose, essential amino acid Lysine and skin supportive Silica. Stratus is infused with Vapour’s face-specific infusion of anti-inflammatory Frankincense, antioxidant Tulsi, and moisturising Lotus flowers"

I loved the fact that the Skin Perfector is light weight, it also combats oily skin without leaving it to dry looking so you are left with velvety skin as opposed to matte skin. It has a kind of metallic finish which reflects the light giving you fresh youthful looking skin.

The Illusionist concealer (£20)is great too! I used under eyes and brows to brighten those areas

"Illusionist Concealer is made with 70% Certified Organic ingredients and 30% natural mineral pigments and vitamins. Illusionist nourishes with Vapour’s face-specific infusion of anti-inflammatory Frankincense, antioxidant Tulsi and moisturising and calming Lotus flowers"

The hero products for me is the Atmosphere luminous Foundation (£35) which like many Vapour products comes in stick form. It's great for quick application, I apply like I'm going into war (which is accurate most days!) and blend with my trust eco styler buffer brush for a perfect finish

"Atmosphere Luminous Foundation is made with 70% Certified Organic ingredients and 30% natural mineral pigments and vitamins. Atmosphere nourishes with Vapour’s face-specific infusion of anti-inflammatory Frankincense, antioxidant Tulsi, and moisturising and calming Lotus flowers"

I have The Illusionist Concealer in 040 and the Atmosphere Foundation in 150 which is for dark skin with red undertones, Vapour id one of the few natural brands I've found that have shades for black women, I can be quite frustrating trying to find ethical, sustainable  and organic products that are suitable. Thankfully brands like Vapour are making way for more brand to expand their shade selection

Vapour is great if you want the look of naturally perfect skin, it's not going to cover all imperfections, but I'm not sure that that's a bad thing! I find it gives me that no make up make up look as opposed to the over done look (which has it's place don't get me wrong!) even with wearing a primer, concealer and foundation the products are still light weight.

Vapour is a luxury organic line, Which is reflected in the price, so this is more along the lines of Bobbie Brown in terms of price with the added advantage of all the vapour products in this review being 100% natural. I've found vapour products to be fuss free and high performance. You can check out more Vapour products and other luxury natural brands at www.beingcontent.com

Balmy For Balms

At my last count I had a grand total of 6 balms (I now have more)...yes you heard right balms! They are everywhere and there is a balm for what seems like everything. I have baby balm, lip balms, face balms body balm it's all a bit balmy! So what are Balms....

balm (bäm)
a.A chiefly Mediterranean perennial herb (Melissa officinalis) in the mint family, grown for its lemon-scented foliage, which is used as a seasoning or for tea. Also called lemon balm.
b.Any of several related plants in the mint family, such as the bee balm and the horse balm.
2.Any of various aromatic resins exuded from several trees and shrubs, especially the balm of Gilead(Commiphora) and related plants.
3.An aromatic salve or oil.
4.A pleasing aromatic fragrance.
5.A soothing, healing, or comforting agent or quality.

It seems even the dictionary can't quite agree with itself on the definition of a balm, but I guess that is the great thing about them. They are the ultimate multitasker (and you know I love a Multi Tasker!)

Niki of Niki's Balms confirms that "a balm is a blend of oil based moisturiser that is solid at room temperature better than neat oil because of ease of use and application which makes it more flexible, also the solidifying agent usually has benefits in itself. Obviously excluding petroleum and paraffin based balms"

Brands such as Niki's Balms, Balm Balm and Moa the green balm have built business off balms alone.
Balms have great healing properties and can be used to heal minor cuts and bruises, colds sores, chapped lips, minor burns, insect bites, blisters you can even melt it down are gargle with some balms to cure a sore throat!

And it doesn't stop there balms can be used for your beauty needs too, to condition eyelashes and make them look longer, as a pre poo conditioner, or scalp remedy, most are gentle enough to use as an eye makeup remover, and can be used as a cleanser.

Some of my favourites include:

Bloom Remedies Dry Skin & Eczema Rescue Organic Baby Balm is great for rashes and dry skin from nappy rash to more extreme conditions such as Eczema

Eden Body Works Temple Balm strengthens hairline and promotes hair growth with stimulating peppermint

Badger Balm Lavender and Bergamot Sleep Balm is a natural sleep remedy not sure if its the relaxing aroma or the temples massage that I use to apply this balm, but it works wonders for me....sleep like a baby!

Balance Me Stellar Face Balm is great for everything! I use it as an other night treatment for face mask and also works wonders on dry skin.

The Lipstick: Vapour Organic Beauty Siren LIpstick

I feel like I just discovered the Loch Ness Monster, I was beginning to think that it would never happen but it has! THANK THE LORD IT HAS! I've found it....a pigmented, naturally derived lipstick! Courtesy of Vapour Organic Beauty. The Siren range of lipsticks(£18) from Vapour use a natural formulation, that is long lasting as well as moisturising free from harmful chemicals that we often eat (yeah I eat my lippy!)

"Siren is designed to protect lips from moisture loss and environmental assault. Siren's NEW botanical infusion contains hydrating Myrrh, Rose buds, healing Lemon Balm, antioxidant Pomegranate, soothing Jojoba oil and essential fatty acid rich Camilina oil"

I have Bold a classic deep red, almost burgundy, It feels amazing on, and has a slight gloss. Honestly it was love at first swatch! the colour payoff is very good, especially for a natural lipstick and it's great if you want a red lip but don't want to go down the pillar box red route. This shade would suit most skin tones, all the Siren Lipsticks have been  chosen to enhance and complement your skin tone. Vapour also have a range of foundation with around 12 shades 5 of which are suitable for brown skin (thank you Vapour!) Vapour Organic Beauty is on the pricey side at £18 for a lipstick however it's just £3.50 more than a MAC lipstick. Personally I'd rather pay a little more for a kinder product (That being said I am turning into a natural ingredient megalomaniac)

I was sent a whole bunch of vapour goodness from Being Content another great find for getting hold of sought after natural and organic products. Being Content concentrates on the luxury and quality of high performance brands such as Vapour Organic Beauty which prides itself on using certified organic ingredients, being completely transparent in all aspects of the brand and being ethical and sustainable (Learn More Here) I'll be working my way through the range and will share my thought over the next week or so.

Organic/Bio Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Organic/Bio Cera Alba (Beeswax), Organic/Bio Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Essential Oils & Natural Fruit Essences, Camelina Sativa Oil, Tocopherol (Natural Vitamin E), Organic/Bio Punica Granatum (Pomegranate Oil), Organic/Bio Rosa Damascena (Rose) Buds, Organic/Bio Melissa Officinalis (Lemon Balm), Commiphora Myrrha (Myrrh)*,  Stevia Rebaudiana (Stevia) Leaf Extract  [+/-: Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, 77492, 77499), Mica (CI 77019), Carmine (CI 75470)]

Beyonce Inspired D I Y Necklace

I'm Obsessed with the Maasai inspired Melody Ehsani necklaces Beyonce wore for Flaunt Magazine. So much so I decided to try my hand at making one from Bungee cords so here goes......

I picked up these Bungee Cords or Luggage Straps from Clas Ohlson I used the 75cm length

5 Bungee Cords
Glue Gun

D I R E C T I O N S
  • Cut off the clips from the bungee cords (you can keep them for future projects)
  • Set out how you would like your necklace to look before glueing, as it is harder to change once you start sticking things together
  • once you have decided on the shape and length of your necklace use your glue gun to glue the ends of the bungee cords to one another (this doesn't have to be too neat as you will cover the ends later)

  • once your glue is dry square off the ends of your necklace
  • using a strong ribbon, wrap around the end to hide your glue and roughly cut edges

  • once you have covered the ends of the necklace use a strong string or leather cord attach to the inside of your necklace with glue
  • To add extra strength to your necklace wrap with a contrasting ribbon this will also cover were you have glued the leather cord

  • now for the fun part! embellish your necklace, I used colourful thread, but you can use studs, gems or beads to make your necklace stand out
  • Use your glue gun to stick your embellishments to your necklace
  • For a more Beyonce esque necklace wear two and mix in other necklaces for a bolder look

You can be as creative as you like with this project, I've gone for a simple take, as I love the original pattern of the bungees. The total cost of this necklace was £7.50!

The Review: Yves Rocher Repair

Yves Rocher is one of the leading beauty brands in France and is currently available in the UK and USA online. I was sent the brands new Repair line for dry and frizzy hair. The line includes Botanical Hair Care Repair OilBotanical Hair Care Nutri-Repair Conditioner and the Botanical Hair Care Nutri-Repair Shampoo. Ingredients are inspired by nature with lots of plant derived ingredients, free from silicone and parabens and the price point is fantastic starting at only £6.70

The Repair Pre Poo Oil is rich with restorative babassu oil and macadamia oil to nourish the scalp. I used on whole length of my hair and left as suggested for 10 minutes on dry hair. This oil mix rivals others on the market such as Morroccan oil but at £10.90 it is a fraction of the price. For me it doesn't beat using coconut oil as a pre poo but its far from a bad product.

The repair shampoo is really nice, it is very moisturising but doesn't strip hair and it's a great size for the price. If you are a fan off Tresseme Naturals shampoo then this is a great alternative to that, I actually found it more moisturising.

The Repair conditioner is rich with Jojoba oil and is very concentrated, the slip with this conditioner is pretty good so not much is needed for my length of hair, however those with longer hair will need more product, I found the 150ml tube on the small size it would be great if it came in the same size as the shampoo. That being said it's a nice rinse out conditioner and again the price is great! The Repair conditioner is 99% naturally derived. This was a great de-tangling conditioner.

I've used the whole line 3 times now and I'm impressed, it's a nice line with reasonably good ingredients for a very good price. The website has a lot of products from Make Up to Skin Care the only downside is that they do not have a full ingredients list on the website which is a bit of a pet peeve of mine. You can check out the Yves Rocher here

D I Y Wax Print Cuff

I'm becoming slightly obsessed with 'Up Cycling' from bangles to candles stick holders I've literally covered everything in fabric, I stopped short of covering Freya! My current DIY attempt are these funky cuffs using jewellery found in the bargain bin.

N E E D E D

1 Cuff (these are quite on trend so you can find them everywhere for a few pounds)
1 Cross (you don't have to use a cross, just something that you can wrap easily with fabric)
Glue Gun

  • Using a pencil mark out the fabric you need to cover the outside of you cuff
  • Good tip for measuring is to place cuff on fabric and roll it from one side to the other mark out a cm around the cuff
  • Cut out the fabric
  • Glue one end of the fabric to the inside of the cuff (this is where the cm extra fabric comes in)

  • Pull the fabric taut and repeat the glueing on other end of your cuff
  • Fold in your edges so it is neat and glue along the length
  • You should be left with a perfectly covered cuff

  • You may or may not want to line your cuff, if you do use the same method to measure a small piece of fabric
  • Make this fabric a cm smaller than you cuff by hemming the edges (you can use your glue gun for this)
  • Glue fabric into the cuff you need to work quickly as the glue dries very fast.

You should now have a perfectly covered and lined cuff you can leave as is or decorate, I chose to decorate with a fabric covered cross.

  • Glue a strip of hemmed fabric to the top of your cross (use about 30cm of fabric if it is to much you can always cut it off)
  • Wrap fabric around the cross pulling tightly as you do
  • secure end with more glue and cut off excess
  • using your glue gun apply glue to your cross and stick to your cuff

And there you have it, A funky wax printed cuff, I know you may not be able to get your hands on the exact items I used for this project but you can definitely find variations, use your imagination and get creative!
